These are former dredging lagoons alongside the River Colne south-east of Colchester, now consisting of rough grassland and ditches. A shallow lake forms in the southernmost lagoon in wet weather. They are important for birds, with a number of species breeding, including avocet, little ringed plover, redshank and lapwing.
